SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.
After a string of violent attacks and a missing student, Cal State San Bernardino is offering self-defense classes for the campus community. Many are on edge after two people were attacked on campus and a 22-year-old woman disappeared. "I think it's a little unusual and disturbing," student Maribel Perez said. The class is offered on a regular basis, but twice as many students turned out given the recent events. "We want students to feel strong and feel empowered here. We want them to feel like they're doing something," said Joe Gutierrez with the campus' office of public affairs. "The university is taking a number of steps to protect them. We've increased police patrols. We have officers from other CSUs helping patrol." Campus police are on the hunt for a man wanted in connection to two attacks on female students while they were on campus. The search also continues for clues into the suspicious disappearance of Sahray Barber, who lives across the street from the CSU. Those in the class said they now know that protecting themselves is one of the best moves they can make. "Because people tell me I'm so small and stuff, I do want to learn how to defend myself. I want to learn the basics at least enough to get away and get help," Perez said. Investigators said they do not believe Barber's disappearance is connected to the two attacks, but they are looking into all possibilities.
