.On Thursday, March 12th a 20-year-old Red Mountain man was found guilty of the three felony counts for the rape and murder of his 71-year-old neighbor.

Sandra Jean McKinney, a well-known Red Mountain woman, was reported missing on April 20, 2014. Upon notification, deputies received information regarding the whereabouts of two abandoned vehicles belonging to the Red Mountain Woman.

Her vehicles were found in an area just a few miles from the home of McKinney, to residents is known as the “dog patch”. A ground and air search was initiated following the discovery of the vehicles, but there was no sign of McKinney.

The following evening, at approximately 4:45 p.m. the body of McKinney was found in an abandoned mine shaft.

Due to the suspicious nature of her disappearance, detectives ruled her death a homicide. Following the homicide, the small Red Mountain community was on edge, wondering if the murderer could be living amongst them. On Monday, May 5, 2014 an arrest warrant was obtained for Jesse Payton Rose, the neighbor of McKinney.

Rose was located at a relative’s residence in the 3100 block of Decatur Boulevard in Las Vegas, Nevada, by members of the Sheriff’s Specialized Enforcement Division and the United States Marshal’s Service. Rose was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Center without incident and was extradited back to California.

Rose pleaded not guilty on May 15, 2014 to the three felony counts, including: murder, causing great bodily injury to elder or dependent and rape by force/fear. After less than 3 hours in deliberation the jury found Rose guilty of all charges, sentencing is set for May 8, 2015. Rose is currently held at the Adelanto Detention Center, but will be transferred to a state prison following sentencing.
