VICTORVILLE — With help from an inmate fire crew, San Bernardino County firefighters battled a quarter-acre vegetation fire Saturday evening, containing flames within 15 minutes and then mopping up for at least an hour, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 5 p.m. Saturday northwest of the intersection at Dos Palmas and Topaz roads.

“The first arriving engine company reported a wind driven 1/4 acre of vegetation burning near the power lines,” County Fire spokesman Jeff Allen said in a statement late Saturday night.

The flames were contained in about 15 minutes, and crews remained on scene for one to two hours afterward performing mop-up duty, according to Allen.

County Fire responded to the blaze with 30 personnel, joined by 14 inmates from a crew based out of the Glen Helen Fire Camp in Devore. The program is a joint venture between County Fire and the Sheriff’s Department.

No injuries or damage to structures were reported. The cause of the fire was under investigation as of Saturday night.
