San Bernardino firefighters converge on 2-alarm blaze Tuesday night

SAN BERNARDINO >> Firefighters converged in the 1600 block of West Magnolia Avenue to battle a two-alarm house fire Tuesday night.

Shortly after 8 p.m. dispatchers received several 9-1-1 calls regarding the house fire and quickly alerted firefighters to the blaze, officials said.

As firefighters drove to the area they could see the smoke and orange glow lighting the night’s sky.

“I could see flames from Ninth Street as I approached the scene,” Battalion Chief Mike Bilheimer said. “We believe the fire started in the garage and found its way into the rest of the structure.”

It took firefighters a short time to get the blaze under control, but as they were mopping up the area they found a grocery cart filled with flammables fully engulfed.

It appears the house was being remodeled, according to one firefighter.

“The home is unoccupied,” Bilheimer said. “It’s still early on. We’ll have to investigate before determining the cause of the fire.”
