Traffic collision in the area of Adelanto Road and Highway 395 at around 2:09 P.M. For reasons still unknown the two-vehicles collided head on. The impact caused the minivan to leave the roadway and land in an open desert.
ADELANTO — Two people were killed and three suffered “critical” injuries in a two-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on Highway 395 near Stater Bros. Stadium, officials said.
The incident was reported at 2:09 p.m., south of Rancho Road, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jodi Miller.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m., County Fire officials, who later said three people suffered critical injuries in the crash, announced that an extrication was underway.
County Fire spokesman Jeff Allen said the extrication took 10 minutes and also that paramedics provided advanced life support for the three injured before they were flown to regional hospitals. The two others involved in the crash were pronounced dead on scene.
Allen said two patients were transported by Mercy Air to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, and one patient was transported to Loma Linda University Medical Center by a California Highway Patrol helicopter.
The cause and circumstances of the crash were under investigation, and Miller said she did not anticipate any further information would be released Sunday.
“It will be a very lengthy investigation,” she said.
At the scene, a dark blue Ford Expedition and white Honda Odyssey could be seen with heavily damaged front ends. The SUV had come to rest in the road while the mini-van was in open desert on the west side of the highway. Both vehicles were upright.
Adelanto city and regional Major Accident Investigation Teams later responded to the scene, according to Miller.
