San Bernardino school police arrest two men suspected of metal theft

SAN BERNARDINO >> School police arrested two men Tuesday suspected of stealing copper from air conditioning units at several San Bernardino City Unified School District campuses.

Shortly after 8 a.m. school police spotted a U-Haul truck near Kendall Elementary School that matched the description of a truck used in reported thefts of copper from SOAR Charter Academy on Mill Street earlier in the day, police said in a news release.

School police along with city police tried to stop the truck but it failed to yield to the officers, leading them on a short chase.

The truck crashed into a parked car on State Street, according to a SBCUSD news release.

Fred Gene Owens, 31 of San Bernardino and Vazshon Dumar Durant, 37 of Rialto were taken into custody after a brief foot chase, police said.

Owens was booked into Central Detention Center in San Bernardino and Durant was booked into West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamongs on suspicion of possession of stolen property, vandalism, and resisting arrest.

Owens is being held in lieu of $110,000 bail and Durant is being held in lieu of $600,000 bail.

School police ask anyone with information about this incident to call them at 909-889-6833.
