Hot temperatures and dry weather didn't help as firefighters battled two brush fires in Southern California, including one that moved dangerously close to homes. A 20-acre brush fire broke out around 8 p.m. Wednesday near Slover and Sycamore avenues in Colton. Rialto and San Bernardino County fire departments were responding.

Another 1/4-acre vegetation fire spread at Peck Road near the 10 Freeway in El Monte, putting several structures at risk. Although both fires were quickly put under control, some neighbors remained concerned. "It's so dry out here, especially with no rain. You could only imagine," El Monte resident Michael Osborne said. A red-flag warning was in place until 8 p.m. Thursday in the Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, the Angeles National Forest, Los Angeles County mountains, Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys and the coastal area stretching into downtown Los Angeles.
