Pomona, Fairplex to welcome Special Olympics World Games athletes

POMONA >> Athletes participating in the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015 will be coming to Pomona as part of the Games’ Host Town program, officials announced Wednesday.

Representatives of Pomona, including Mayor Elliott Rothman, from Fairplex, Cal Poly Pomona and the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles made the announcement at Fairplex.

Athletes are expected to be in Pomona July 21 through July 23 where they will be welcomed to Southern California before the Games begin July 25, according to a statement from organizers of the Games.

Fairplex is expected to host an event for the athletes visiting Pomona, according to a Fairplex spokeswoman. Activities for athletes being hosted by Claremont and La Verne, both part of the Host Town Program, will also take place at Fairplex.

Rancho Cucamonga and Ontario will also be hosting athletes.

About 100 Southern California communities between San Diego and San Luis Obispo have signed on to take part in the Host Town Program, according to the Games website.

About 7,000 Special Olympics athletes will compete at the 2015 World Games, the website said. Through the Host Town Program delegations of athletes will participate in three days of recreation, entertainment and cultural exchange activities aside from training and resting for their athletic competitions.
