Highland projects postponed

Just days after telling a large “State of the County” crowd how great San Bernardino County is, Third District Supervisor James Ramos asked for a three-year extension on his own Highland project “because of the economic downturn.”

The plan is to demolish the old Pepito’s restaurant on Base Line just east of Victoria Avenue, and replace it with a Spanish style drive thru restaurant and bakery.

The two businesses, with parking and landscaping, will occupy most of the half-acre lot, which now includes three parcels that will be combined.

On Tuesday, the Highland Planning Commission approved the extension with little discussion.

Commission Chairman Randall Hamerly wondered if a water element should be included because of the drought, but Senior Planner Megan Irwin said the landscaping plan already includes a requirement for drought-resistant landscaping.

The Planning Commission also gave a one-year postponement to a reconfiguration of the car wash at the Valero gas station at Base Line and Seine Avenue.

This one got a conditional use permit in 2001 and has had a couple of revisions since then.

The latest change would eliminate a planned Lube and Tune and move the car wash, adding three vacuum stations and an additional Base Line driveway.

In other action, the Commission approved a sign plan for the Krazy Bargins at Base Line and Lynwood Way.
