Thousands turn out for Planes of Fames Airshow in Chino

CHINO >> Vintage military aircraft along with contemporary planes drew thousands to the second day of the two-day Planes of Fame Airshow 2015 at the Chino Airport on Sunday.

They came to get up close to 50 historic planes while they were on the ground and to watch others take to the sky where skilled pilots put the aircraft through spectacular maneuvers.

Among the vintage planes brought in for the show was a World War II era Douglas C-47 Skytrain, sometimes referred to as a Dakota.

The plane was flown in from the Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana, said Dennis Arrobbio, a volunteer senior docent at the museum.

The aircraft is the military version of the DC-3 that was among the first commercial airliners, Arrobbio said.

Many people — young and old alike — stopped to ask Arrobbio and other volunteers questions about the plane.

And that’s just what the museum’s founder, retired U.S. Air Force Maj. General William Lyon wanted to see.

“General Lyon wants the younger generations to see what the Greatest Generation in aviation did,” Arrobbio said.

Contemporary aircraft, such as an Air Force C-17 transport plane that is part of the 452nd Air Mobility Team at March Air Reserve Base near Riverside also drew huge crowds.
