Authorities say man re-entered his burning car
VICTORVILLE — A man died in a burning vehicle on southbound Interstate 15 near Bear Valley Road on Monday night after he reportedly drove the wrong way on the freeway, crashed the car and climbed back into it as it burned, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officials believe the man was suicidal. He reportedly was driving north in southbound lanes around 10
30 p.m. when his car "burst into flames" on the right side of southbound I-15, according to CHP logs.
San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department and Fire Department officials were requested and were en route when CHP reported the man got out of the burning car, but then got back in it around 10:33 p.m. Sheriff's officials arrived at 10:39 p.m. and requested the county coroner.
Southbound Interstate 15 was closed at Bear Valley Road at 10:47 p.m., CHP logs show. Calls to the Sheriff's Department for more information Tuesday were not immediately returned.
The Coroner's office has not yet identified the victim.
