Base Line and Boulder Avenue was decorated in purple in preparation for the Highland Relay For Life this Saturday, May 16, at Immanuel Baptist Church.
This year's event, raising funds for the American Cancer Society, is themed "America Without Cancer" and will be decorated in red, white and blue as a salute to our country and its armed forces.
According to event chair Cindy Larson, 28 teams are signed up to participate and 300 to 500 people are expected to attend throughout the day. Due to the event's relocation from the Highland Community Park to Immanual Baptist Church the event will not be a full 24 hours as in years past.
The event will start at 9 a.m. with opening ceremony, followed by the survivor lap, and will conclude at 11 p.m. The caregivers lap will be at 9:30 p.m.
Local veterans are invited to participate in a special veterans lap that will be held at 10 a.m.
Throughout the day volleyball matches through Vball4Life will be held as teams challenge each other and raise additional funds for the American Cancer Society.
The Luminary Ceremony in honor of lost cancer patients is at 7:30 p.m. To add even more Americana to the event a sock hop, following the Luminary ceremony, will feature a disc jockey and several dance contests including the twist and the jitterbug. Guests are also encouraged to come dressed for the 1950s and enter the costume contest.
Larson said she is very excited for the event honoring and encouraging cancer survivors, those lost to cancer, and those whose loved ones have cancer.
"I have the best organizing committee I could have asked for," Larson said. "They've been able to roll with the punches and we're going to have a great event
