Male arrested, being questioned at Sheriff's station
BARSTOW — Several San Bernardino County Sheriff's deputies, Homicide Team detectives and SWAT Team officials were at a property in the 22000 block of Main Street on Tuesday morning investigating two dead bodies found inside the home after an hours-long standoff.
Meanwhile, deputies were working to identify the male subject who was arrested after the standoff at the small house on a remote stretch of Main Street/National Trails Highway near Hinkley Road in unincorporated Barstow. Sheriff's Sgt. Jason Radeleff told the Daily Press and Desert Dispatch on Tuesday morning that he "has heard talk" that the male arrested was the son of the man and woman who were found dead.
"We're still trying to identify him," Radeleff said. "I have no idea what his name even is, so, until that point, we have no idea if (those rumors) are true."
Authorities said that deputies received calls on Monday night around 6 p.m. from family members of the residents, requesting that deputies conduct a welfare check. The callers told deputies that they had not heard from the home's residents, according to Radeleff.
Deputies arrived after 6 p.m. Monday and found the home locked before leaving, Radeleff said. Authorities then said that worried family members arrived at the home and insisted that deputies check the inside of the house. Sheriff's deputies arrived around 10 p.m. Monday and saw a male inside the home who was refusing to come out. Radeleff said around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday that it was still not known if the subject was armed at any time.
Radeleff said that deputies entered the house and the male hid in a bedroom. The body of a woman was found inside before deputies exited the home and alerted the Sheriff's SWAT Team around 11:20 p.m.
The SWAT Team arrived, and a Sheriff's helicopter landed around 5:45 a.m. Sheriff's spokeswoman Cindy Bachman said Tuesday that the male barricaded inside the home surrendered peacefully to deputies around 4:20 a.m. and was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Radeleff said the male had no weapons when he was arrested.
Deputies found a second body, a deceased man, inside around 5 a.m. and requested homicide investigators at about 5:45 a.m.
The investigation is ongoing, and Sheriff's officials had no further details Tuesday.
