Library offers summer reading program

Story time, special performances geared to youngsters

BARSTOW — "I love my dad, yes I do," the book reader said. "He's very kind and funny too. He teaches lots of things to me."

About 20 children listened during Thursday's Kids Story time at the Barstow Public Library last week. Since June 11, the library has held story time at 10:45 a.m. every Thursday.

The story time program continues this Thursday with Moon & Stars Paper Craft.

"The basis of the program is to keep kids reading throughout the summer," library manager David Gibbs said. "Actually, studies show kids lose a certain amount of reading level when they stop reading in the summer. The idea is to get kids reading a certain amount of books so they can keep their level or raise it before school."

Gibbs encourages the entire family to attend.

"Statistics show when adults read and be an example, kids want to read too."

Lydia Baisa brought her great granddaughter, Kailey Ortiz, 6, to the story time.

"It's great. It's wonderful for her. She loves it," Baisa said. "It helps her a lot to read. She comprehends things and she's around other kids."

The library also has performances at 3 p.m. every Tuesday. Prismatic Magic is the performance scheduled for today.
