BUELLTON, Calif. (AP) — A California Highway Patrol officer has been treated for non-life threatening injuries after being attacked by a bull that had broken through three fences in Buellton.

KEYT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1N9tO3W ) that the bull had found its way to U.S. 101 Tuesday afternoon when officers arrived on scene. CHP conducted traffic breaks to keep motorists from encountering the loose animal and any gunfire.

An officer found and shot the bull at the request of its owner, knocking it to the ground. As the officer approached the animal to confirm it was dead, it got up and attacked the officer, knocking him down the hillside.

The officer who had been attacked stood up and several rounds before killing the bull. The officer was taken to Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital for treatment.
