Summer heat recharges, monsoon storms could loom

SOUTHLAND Weather maps are setting up some changes for Southern California in the coming days. Muggyness will add to the early summer heat as a batch of monsoon moisture is poised to make a run for it across the Mexican border. High pressure that has baked the Southland will drop anchor over the desert Southwest drawing the moisture northward. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible from Saturday through Wednesday in the mountains and deserts, and most likely during the afternoons and evenings. A few storms could break out Monday in the valleys and near the coast. These storms will be capable of heavy downpours and gusty winds. The heat, humidity and chances of storminess could persist through much of next week. Afternoon temperatures Thursday returned to triple digits including Beaumont and Perris. Lake Elsinore hit 104 and Palm Springs baked at 111. San Bernardino mustered up 95 degrees. An excessive heat warning is posted for the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County until Saturday. Along the coast, the marine layer will push a few more miles inland keeping temperatures in the air conditioned 70’s. Inland cities will be about 5 degrees cooler for the weekend, but still in the low 90’s.
