Arrest made in Redlands carjacking in which two girls leaped to safety

REDLANDS >> The man seen in a video carjacking a vehicle from a 7-Eleven, leading two young sisters to jump from the moving vehicle, has been arrested, police said Friday night.

In a late post Friday on Facebook, police announced the arrest of 24-year-old Cory Michael Ahumada of Highland.

A 10-year-old girl inside the vehicle grabbed her 2-year-old sister and jumped from the moving car to avoid being kidnapped. Ahumada allegedly stole their mother’s car from the gas station on Sunday.

Few details were released about Ahumada’s arrest, including the time or location, however, San Bernardino County sheriff’s booking information showed that as of 9:30 p.m. Friday, the 24-year-old had not been booked into jail.

According to police, a woman left her car running at a gas pump at the 7-Eleven, 1161 Lugonia Ave., as she went inside to pay, leaving her daughters in the backseat.

A man jumped into the car and stated to drive off. As the panicked mother came running back to the pump, the video shows the sisters jumping out the rear passenger side door and rolling onto the asphalt. The girls suffered minor abrasions, according to Redlands police.

Police said Ahumada was identified through surveillance footage when made a purchase inside the 7-Eleven before stealing the car.

Ahumada made a purchase at the 7-Eleven before the incident and was subsequently identified from the surveillance video footage. Anyone with information on this incident was asked to contact Redlands Detective Mike Merriman at (909) 389-6675.
