Smoke advisories underscore health concerns

Two fires in the San Bernardino National Forest continue pumping tons of particulate pollution into the air. The smoke has made breathing unhealthful in some concentrated areas. The Air Quality Management District is maintaining smoke advisories in some mountain, foothill and deserts. Areas of greatest health concern are: · portions of the central and eastern San Bernardino Mountains; and · portions of the central San Bernardino Valley. Tips to keep in mind if near fire zones · Avoid outdoor activities · Keep windows closed at home · Keep windows closed while driving Dr. Donald Bucklin is with U.S. Health Works, which has clinics in San Bernardino. He warns that the smallest particles in smoke can travel deep into the lungs. That is a health threat. “If you have Asthma or significant heart disease, a small dose of smoke can make you terribly sick. If you have health good lungs, each heavy smoke exposure is kind of like a pack of cigarettes. One pack will not likely be the end of you, but the fewer packs, the better,” Dr. Bucklin said.
