Procter & Gamble to settle consumer protection case

RIVERSIDE District Attorney Mike Hestrin announced Friday, that The Procter & Gamble Company (P & G) has agreed to settle a civil protection lawsuit in the amount of $850,000. The Riverside County DA’s Office joined with the District Attorney’s Offices in Yolo, Fresno and Shasta counties to bring and now settle this consumer protection case against Procter & Gamble. Under the terms of the settlement, without admitting any wrongdoing, P & G has agreed to pay $850,000 in civil penalties and costs. Included in that total, each of four DA’s Offices will receive $194,000 in civil penalties and $12,000 each for costs. The investigation started after inspections into some of P & G’s Olay product line. The civil complaint alleged that P & G’s packaging violated California’s slack fill law. Slack fill is the use of oversized packaging to make the product seem larger than it actually is. After being advised of the allegations, P & G launched a review of its products and has committed to changing the packaging of its entire Olay product line. The case was handled in Riverside County.
