Don't warn naughty children they'll go to jail, police tell parents

Police force asks parents to stop telling mischievous youngsters they will be sent to jail, in effort to appear more approachable

A police force has asked parents to stop telling naughty children that they will be taken off to jail as part of a drive to make the force appear more approachable.

Durham Constabulary released a poster asking parents: “Please don’t tell your children that we will take them off to jail if they are bad. We want them to run to us if they are scared — NOT be scared of us.”

The poster, titled “public service announcement”, was posted on the force’s Facebook page this week, and has been shared over 59,000 times and “liked” more than 40,000 times.
