Man to be sentenced for attempted murder of a CHP officer

RIVERSIDE Javier Hernandez will be sentenced on Friday for attempted murder of a CHP officer who was stabbed multiple times including in the eye. On October 25, 2012, CHP Officer Dane Norem responded to a call of a possibly suicidal man on the La Sierra Avenue overpass above the 91 freeway. The man, later identified as Javier Hernandez, 48, of Riverside, spotted the patrol car and climbed onto the overpass fence. Norem, believing that the man could continue to climb over and then jump to the freeway below, potentially killing himself and endangering freeway motorists, grabbed the man’s leg in an effort to prevent that from happening. Hernandez had a knife and then slashed or stabbed the officer, including a stab wound to his right eye, blinding him. Norem continued to hold onto the man so he couldn’t climb over the fence until several passersby stopped to help. Hernandez was ultimately taken into custody. Hernandez faces a potential sentence of 22 years to life in prison.
