CRESTLINE A half-century later, it’s one of the coldest cases in the homicide files of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department. And, investigators wonder if the killer or killers are still alive. James Boles, his wife, and their two sons were spending the family’s first weekend in a new cabin at Crestline. They’d just moved from Orange County as a large, noisy party rolled on at a nearby house the night of August 14th, 1965. The family was herded into a bedroom and shot dead. The family dog was found slain on a couch. In all, 36 shell casings were found in the cabin, the gunfire apparently not heard by those at the party. It wasn’t for two days until Mrs. Boles brother, Floyd Rice, went to check on the family and found the horrific scene. Investigators narrowed their case to four viable suspects, including Rice, but no charges were filed. Rice died in 1986. Without a motive and any new evidence, investigators are doubtful one of the Inland Empire’s most baffling crimes will ever be solved.
