Officers from the San Bernardino City Police Department and District Police are teaming up to conduct special traffic enforcement in and around school zones throughout the city this month in an effort to keep school children safe.
More than 50,000 students in the San Bernardino City Unified School District returned to school on Monday, August 3, increasing pedestrian and car traffic around the city and putting dozens of school buses back on the street. While traffic enforcement is a year-round priority, officers are stepping up patrols in August for the start of the school year.
Police remind drivers that the speed limit in all school zones is 25 miles per hour when children are present, regardless of the posted speed limit in that area.
Those dropping children off at school are also advised to obey all traffic laws, including not double parking or blocking driveways, and most importantly, stopping for pedestrians in crosswalks. Drivers are also urged to stay off cell phone and be on the lookout for children who may cross the street outside of a crosswalk.
As part of the collaborative effort, police officers from both agencies will be at several schools throughout San Bernardino enforcing the law. They will be in patrol cars, on motorcycles, and on foot.
