A man was struck and killed by a freight train near downtown Riverside. The fatality was reported August 4, 2015 12:40 p.m. at a Union Pacific rail crossing on Brockton Avenue, near Magnolia Avenue, less than a half-block from a Department of Motor Vehicles office.“He’s an adult male, but his injuries are such that it may be hard to identify him,” Riverside police Lt. Chad Milby told City News Service. “We don’t know at this point whether it was a suicide or an accident.”The victim’s body was located on the south side of the tracks, but Milby said it wasn’t immediately known in which direction the pedestrian was heading. The train stopped at the Brockton crossing and was expected to remain there for the duration of the police investigation, forcing traffic to detour onto side streets.Witnesses say a pedestrian may not have seen or heard an approaching train before he walked onto the Union Pacific tracks on Brockton Avenue Tuesday. But, the same witnesses told police the crossing arms, warning lights and bells were operating. The elderly man had his head down when he stepped onto the tracks and was killed by the passing train. The coroner identified him Tuesday evening as Bobby Welch, 81, of Riverside.
