SAN BERNARDINO >> A man armed with a knife was shot and wounded Thursday morning by police after he continued to advance on officers despite commands to drop the weapon, police said.
The incident stunned neighbors.
“This is usually a very quiet neighborhood,” said Lakeisha Jackson, whose parents have lived in the neighborhood for 22 years.
One woman, Lou Pollack, said she woke up around 9 a.m. to find several police vehicles swarming her block on Bangor Avenue.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m., police had arrived at a home in the 1700 block of North Bangor in response to a domestic-violence report, Sgt. Vicki Cervantes said.
Officers confronted a man identified as Chris Solorio, 37 of San Bernardino inside the home. Solorio was armed with a large military style survival knife, according to authorities.
Police ordered Solorio to drop the knife but he continued to advance on the officers knife in hand, officials said.
One officer fired his Taser, which was ineffective, Cervantes said in a written statement.
“Mr. Solorio continued toward the officers failing to comply with their commands, so the second officer fired one round from his handgun, which struck the suspect in the upper part of his body,” Cervantes said. “Mr. Solorio was not stopped by this injury and continued to walk toward the side yard, where two additional officers were located, still armed with the knife, at which time one of those officers deployed his Taser.”
That Taser sent Solorio to the ground, resulting in him being taken into custody.
Solorio, suffering from non-life-threatening wounds, was taken to a hospital, Cervantes said.
“He’s currently waiting for surgery but his wounds are considered not life-threatening,” she said. “Once he recovers he’ll be booked into West Valley Detention Center on suspicion of domestic violence, child endangerment and assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.”
