VICTORVILLE — A Bureau of Prisons guard was uninjured after being assaulted by an inmate with a "prison-made weapon" at the federal penitentiary Friday morning, authorities said.
According to a U.S. Bureau of Prisons statement, an inmate at the United States Penitentiary Victorville, in the 13700 block of Air Expressway Boulevard, allegedly assaulted a Correctional Officer inside a housing unit shortly after 9 a.m. The inmate was reportedly armed with a weapon made in prison. The area was quickly secured, and the officer was not injuried.
No other staff member or inmate was injured, and the inmate population was returned to their housing units.
The prison was placed on limited operational status, and the FBI was notified. Authorities said the prison will return to full operational status after a preliminary investigation is completed.
At no time was the public in danger.
The prison houses approximately 1,450 high-security male offenders.
