BIG BEAR - An intense air assault against the Inland Empire’s latest mountain wildfire is proving effective. The Summit Fire had threatened as many as 500 homes Sunday near the Snow Summit Ski Resort, but at last report none had been damaged. A combination of mandatory and voluntary evacuations forced many people from their homes and closed four Forest Service Roads. Light winds pushed flames from tree-to-tree sending up clouds of smoke that were visible from the mountain resorts and throughout the Inland Empire’s metro area. About 100 acres were charred in the first 5-hours. Thirty-percent of the fire had been contained at last report Sunday evening. Four air tankers and four helicopters pounced on the flames dumping retardants and water. Snow-making machines were activated at Snow Summit keeping the fire away from the ski runs. All schools in the Bear Valley Unified School District will be closed on Monday. Officials cited several street closures along with the possible utilization of school facilities to support the fire fighting efforts. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
