BIG BEAR – The fading Summit Fire is causing enough smoke to prevent reopening of schools Tuesday. The Bear Valley Unified School District says they’ll keep the doors closed at all schools except the more distant Fallsvale School at Forest Falls. Most mandatory evacuations that covered nearly 500 homes were lifted Monday afternoon. Roads within the evacuation area remained closed to the general public. As for the fire fight, it’s winding down but it will take 350 Forest Service personnel some time to put out the last of the smoldering trees. Fire fighters are being challenged by steep rugged terrain, rolling debris, and numerous standing dead trees. At one point Sunday, the Summit Fire had threatened hundreds of homes near the Snow Summit Ski Resort, but at last report none had been damaged. The cause of the 100 acre fire remains under investigation.
