2 Women Dead After Car Goes Up Embankment, Slams Into Caltrans Sign Pole on 10 Fwy in Upland: CHP

Two women were killed when their apparently speeding car went up an embankment and struck the pole of an electric Caltrans sign on the 10 Freeway in Upland on Monday night, authorities said.

CHP officers responded about 10:15 p.m. to a report of a two-vehicle collision on the eastbound 10 just east of Mountain Avenue, according to Sgt. Eric Lee of the California Highway Patrol.

One of the vehicles, a white Scion TC, was traveling at a high-rate-of-speed when it sideswiped a car it was trying to pass, Lee said.

The collision caused the Scion to spin out of control and overturn, according to Lee. It then went up the right shoulder embankment and crashed into a pole that holds an electric Caltrans sign.

Lee said two women inside the Scion were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, according to Lee, who added that the person was not injured.

Investigators were looking into whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

No further information was immediately provided.
