Three construction workers remain in critical condition following Friday night’s partial collapse of a temporary bridge support at East Grand Boulevard near the 91 Freeway.
A new bridge deck was being lowered into position when the temporary support beams gave way striking the workers. Nine workers were hurt suffering an assortment of injuries. Eight remained hospitalized Saturday. All worked for Atkinson Walsh Construction Joint Venture. A structural engineering team has inspected the supports and reported on Saturday that the bridge is in the proper position. Traffic will not be allowed on East Grand Boulevard between Third Street and Joy Street until Monday while an investigation continues. The mishap did not affect the 91 Freeway, according to a statement from the Riverside County Transportation Commission. But, work was suspended until Monday. The construction is part of an ongoing widening project on the ‘91’ through Corona. Names of the injured were not released.
