APPLE VALLEY — The Sun City Cruisers, of Apple Valley, hosted its seventh annual car show Saturday, “the culmination” of a year’s worth of fundraising, according to President Dan Cox. “It’s a car club, but most of it’s directed toward giving to charities,” Cox said. Each year the group selects a local nonprofit from various suggestions that members and the community contribute to benefit from their shows and fundraisers. This year’s selection was the Assistance League of the Victor Valley, a chapter of the National Assistance League, with various philanthropic programs with a focus of benefiting local elementary school children. Cox told the Daily Press that while there are about 75 members of the Cruisers group, they only have about a dozen classic cars among them.“Of course we have a lot of car enthusiasts,” Cox said, “but even more than that, we have a lot of give-back enthusiasts.” Saturday’s show displayed a total of 151 cars at the Sun City Del Webb Mariposa Lodge. “The people here come back again each year because of the venue,” Cox said, also noting that Saturday’s sunny weather was “perfect” for the event, despite warnings of rain.Among the cars was a bright yellow 1969 Chevy Camaro, with the sign displayed next to it bragging “Not only is this a rare car, it is a survivor,” known in its former years as the “Chevrolet advertising photo vehicle.”Another competitor was a factory-built replica 1965 Shelby Cobra 427 S/C that owners Harry and Janet Dupre said their first time driving in 2006 was “a dream come true.”In selecting which cars and owners to award, six judges, three men and three women, chose their favorite 32 cars and the top 25 with the most votes won, with the top pick winning “Best of Show.”Additionally, three “Mayor’s Choice” awards were given as selected by the Apple Valley, Victorville and Adelanto mayors, along with the Bob Biamonte Memorial award, as selected by the wife of the former Cruisers member who recently lost his life to cancer. Along with browsing through all of the classic cars, attendees participated in raffles benefiting the Assistance League and visited vendors and food booths at the family event.
