Broesche had arranged to meet his wife – whom he had separated from after a domestic violence incident – at an AM-PM at Fifth Street and Palm Avenue in Highland to exchange property, according to a San Bernardino County sheriff’s news release. The release states that when Broesche’s wife entered his tractor-trailer to retrieve her property, he threw her into the sleeper portion of the vehicle and took off.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

San Bernardino police started chasing the big rig about 8 a.m. They notified sheriff’s dispatch that they were chasing a kidnapping suspect, according to the sheriff's release.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

California Highway Patrol officers took over the chase on the northbound lanes of I-15 near Kenwood Avenue, according to a Highway Patrol release.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

Officers chased Broesche up the 15 to the Wild Wash Road exit – nearly 60 miles away between Apple Valley and Barstow – where a spike strip disabled the big rig’s front tires, and it pulled to the right shoulder.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

The passenger got out of the cab and was rescued by officers. Broesche refused to get out of the vehicle, despite commands given by officers via cellphone, according to the CHP release.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

Officers shot out a window of the big rig using a shotgun firing beanbag rounds, CHP Officer Ryan Camara said.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

It was during this time that Broesche injured himself. The news release did not specify the nature of the self-inflicted wound. Camara confirmed that it was not a gunshot wound, but that it did puncture the suspect’s skin.googleoff: allgoogleon: all
