Snow, rain and gusty winds hit Southern California Monday

Caltrans District 8 issued a chain requirement for residents in the San Bernardino County mountain areas until further notice.

A cold front moving across Southern California will bring cloudy skies, strong northwest winds, rain and cooler temperatures in the 60s. The Inland Empire will see highs in the mid-60s with chances for morning showers. The County Public Health Office issued a cold weather alert for Southern California areas until Tuesday. Wind chill is expected to be below 32 degrees. Wind advisories were issued for the coastal and mountain areas until 10 a.m. High surf advisories were also issued until 4 p.m. The beaches will see highs in the mid-60s and a chance of showers. Expect temperatures in the mid-30s with strong wind gusts up to 70 mph and chances of snow in the mountain communities. Caltrans District 8 issued a chain requirement for residents in the San Bernardino County mountain areas until further notice. The high deserts will also see gusty winds up to 40 mph, a 30 percent chance of rain and cool temperatures in the low-50s.

Caltrans Chain Control Requirement Levels:

R-0: No Restrictions R-1: Chains or snow tread tires required. Snow tires must have a tread depth of 6/32″ with an M&S imprint on the tire’s sidewall. R-2: Chains required on all vehicles, except four-wheel drives or all-wheel drives with snow tread tires on all four wheels. Four-wheel drives must carry chains in the vehicle. If you have four-wheel drive, engage it. Use 4-Low only if your vehicle becomes stuck. R-3: Chains required on all vehicles, no exceptions.

IT’S THE LAW: Carry tire chains at all times during winter travel in the mountains!
