Colder weather grounds virus-carrying mosquitoes

Colder weather has brought down the curtain on the mosquito ‘season’ as the number of humans with West Nile virus set records this year. Riverside County had a record six fatalities, San Bernardino County three and a statewide total of 32, also a record. It was the first year for fatalities in Riverside County since 2008. California’s human cases numbered 594, down slightly from the more than 700 in 2014. The number of West Nile infections in California has been steadily rising since 2011. Riverside County mounted an aggressive offensive against disease-carrying mosquitoes in September. Truck-mounted foggers went through neighborhoods in Moreno Valley, the Canyon Crest area of Riverside, Perris and Nuevo spraying insecticide.
