Incident occurred in Llano, just outside county line
PHELAN — A Union Pacific train crashed into a truck Sunday in the unincorporated community of Llano, about a mile west of Phelan and just outside the San Bernardino County line, according to California Highway Patrol incident logs.
Reported at 1:44 p.m., the crash resulted in the train getting stuck on the rails while the pickup, a white Toyota Tundra, rested on the tracks. The tail-end of the westbound train extended into Phelan and was blocking the Oasis Road crossing just south of Palmdale Road. As of 3:30 p.m., motorists on Palmdale Road wishing to drive south on Oasis were being diverted to Sheep Creek Road, causing some traffic delays due to vehicles turning around.
The truck appeared to be driving on the tracks before the crash and the train was carrying flammable liquids, according to CHP incident logs. There was no immediate word of possible injuries.
The damage to the train, however, was minimal, logs showed. As of 2:52 p.m., crews acknowledged the train would remain stuck until the vehicle could be lifted off the tracks. There was not an estimate on when that would occur by mid-afternoon Sunday.
The crash happened on Palmdale Road and 263rd Street on the border of Llano, a community with a population of about 1,200. Los Angeles County officials were handling the crash details since the incident occurred within their jurisdiction.
