If you noticed that city of San Bernardino police officers were looking a bit scruffy in November, know that it was for a good cause.

About half the men in the department participated in No Shave November to raise money for the Loma Linda Cancer Research Center, Police Chief Jarrod Burguan said. Participants each promised to donate a minimum of $40. Some also got sponsorships.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

In all, the officers raised about $10,000, Burguan said Monday, Nov. 30.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

“It’s been good for the organization. It’s one of those things that touches people,” Burguan said.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

Two former San Bernardino police officers recently died from cancer, the chief said.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

The department suspended its rules on facial hair for the month. The sight provided an entry for the public to engage officers in conversation about cancer awareness.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

“The notion behind it was people see police officers in uniform with a beard or facial hair that they don’t normally see,” Burguan said.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

The officers had their faces shaved Monday at Loma Linda University Medical Center. Awards were presented in several categories, including ugliest beard. Officer Gabe Garcia, who was critically wounded in an August 2014 gun battle, grew a beard and attended Monday’s event.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

Bryce Hanes, the officer who was killed in a traffic collision in Ontario on Nov. 5, was participating as well at the time of his death. The Police Department included a flier in the funeral program to explain why officers were not clean shaven for the ceremonies and to create awareness of the fundraiser.googleoff: allgoogleon: all

“My wife and my daughter actually like my facial hair,” Burguan said. “They want me to keep it. Sorry, it’s coming off today.”
