COLTON: Mosquito capable of carrying Zika discovered

San Bernardino County health officials have found a second mosquito here that could be capable of carrying the Zika virus, as well as other tropical diseases.

So far, these are the only two of the striped Aedes aegypti mosquitoes found in the part of the county served by the San Bernardino County Division of Environmental Health Services, Mosquito and Vector Control Program.

The first one was found in October 2015.

The county shares mosquito and vector control responsibilities with the Ontario-based West Valley Mosquito and Vector Control District.

According to a state Department of Public Health website, these non-native mosquitoes have also been found in Upland, Montclair and in Los Angeles and Orange county cities that include Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, Duarte, Montebello, El Monte, East El Monte, Anaheim and Garden Grove.

The Aedes aegypti can transmit several viral diseases including Yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya and Zika.

These mosquitoes bite primarily in the daytime, public health officials say.

San Bernardino County officials note that water-filled containers around the home are ideal habitats for egg laying.

These should be drained or dumped, they say.
