FONTANA: Nurse accused of sexually abusing 3 children pleads not guilty

The Azusa registered nurse accused of sexually abusing at least three children, including a family member, pleaded not guilty to nine counts of lewd acts with a child, court records show.

Sandie Sumalpong, 26, was arraigned Thursday afternoon in West Valley Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga.

Fontana police authorities have not released where Sumalpong works as a nurse because the case is still under investigation and they are searching for more potential victims.

“We don’t know if anyone at his place of work was a victim, but we are actively investigating this case,” said Sgt. Brian Heaviside, spokesman for the Fontana Police Department.

The family of Sumalpong’s young relative called Fontana investigators to allege Sumalpong has been sexually abusing the child for some time, according to police.

After an investigation, officers arrested Sumalpong at his Azusa home Tuesday.

Police believe he allegedly sexually abused at least two other children who are not related to him, officials said.

Sumalpong is being held at West Valley Detention Center in lieu of $1.7 million bail, according to San Bernardino County Sheriff’s booking records.

He is scheduled to be back in court June 30 for both a pre-preliminary hearing and for a bail hearing.

The case is still under investigation. Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Fontana police at 909-350-7740.
