A Chihuahua named Jack Sparrow is recovering at an Upland veterinary hospital after ingesting methamphetamine in early July. His owner, Isaiah Nathaniel Sais, 21, of Fontana, was arrested Friday, July 8, 2016, on suspicion of cruelty to animals.
Jack Sparrow is recovering from methamphetamine overdose. Not the fictional pirate of the Caribbean – a small Chihuahua from Fontana.
On July 5, Jack’s owner brought him to the Inland Valley Veterinary Specialists and Emergency Center in Upland, police said in a news release Monday.
Jack’s owner, identified by police as 21-year-old Isaiah Nathaniel Sais of Fontana, told doctors he believed Jack may have ingested methamphetamine, police said.
According to test results, he was right. Jack tested positive for the street drug known as crank, according to the news release.
But Sais left the vet’s office with Jack before he could be treated, the release said.
Doctors could see the small dog convulsing as his owner carried him away, so they called Fontana Animal Services, which quickly acted on the dog’s behalf.
Officers found Sais and Jack at a home in the 10400 block of Hemlock Avenue. The dog was apparently still convulsing and seizing from the overdose.
Officers took Jack from his owner and took him back to the animal hospital.
On Friday, Fontana police officers found Sais near Foothill and Vineyard boulevards in Rancho Cucamonga and arrested him on a warrant for suspicion of animal cruelty. He’s being held at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, with bail set at $50,000.
“Jack continues to rehabilitate at the Inland Valley Veterinary Specialists & Emergency Center in Upland for the time being,” the release states. He’s hypersensitive to noise and sudden movement, but is expected to recover. “Once he is well enough, he will be transferred to a temporary foster home where he can continue to recover.”
