Deputies arrested an Upland man for allegedly scamming people while he was employed by a pool repair company in San Bernardino, according to a San Bernardino County sheriff’s news release.
Todd William Karcher, 49, was arrested 9:12 a.m. Wednesday on suspicion of theft by false pretense and grand theft. He was booked into Central Station in San Bernardino, where he posted bail and was released from custody at 10 p.m., the news release stated.
Karcher was arrested in connection with an incident that happened July 25. At 9 a.m. that day, an unidentified victim called a pool repair company in San Bernardino. Karcher allegedly identified himself as a new employee, and provided the victim with a work estimate under the company’s name as well as an estimate for additional work under his name.
The victim reportedly paid Karcher a $1,500 deposit by check, the news release states. Karcher allegedly cashed the check the next day, but never contacted the victim or performed any work. The victim reportedly tried to get a refund but couldn’t.
The victim reported the transaction to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, whose detectives found out that the company had fired Karcher for scamming other victims in Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
According to the Sheriff’s Department website, Karcher is not scheduled yet to appear in court.
The department asks anyone who has recently been in touch with Karcher to call 909-387-3545
