The fire was 15 percent contained by the evening. No evacuations have been ordered and nobody has been injured, Cal Fire officials say.
A 40-acre brush fire that sparked Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28, on the west side of Lake Elsinore continues to challenge firefighters.
By 8:45 p.m., the fire - which was reported at 1:21 p.m. near Grand Avenue and Evergreen Street in the Lakeland Village community - was 15 percent contained, said Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department spokeswoman Jennifer Fuhrman. Firefighters at that time were preparing to continue their efforts through the night.
No homes are threatened and nobody has been, Fuhrman said. Some 185 firefighters were assigned to the fire, along with two helicopters and six air tankers.
Fuhrman said fire officials initially thought the fire had the potential to grow to 200 acres, but now believe it won't get that big.Witnesses told California Highway Patrol dispatchers that it was at the bottom of a hillside and spreading.
