LOS ANGELES >> Police are looking for two men suspected in the killing of a 19-year-old Canadian woman who was found stabbed to death in 1969 near the site of the Manson killings in Los Angeles.
The Los Angeles Police Department released the sketches of two men Friday suspected of killing Reet Jurvetson, also known as “Jane Doe No. 59,” following a July interview with a witness in Montreal, Canada, regarding a person of interest named John or Jean. The witness remembered meeting Jurvetson and the man at a Montreal cafe in 1969, according to police.
The sketches depict how the men looked at 1969 when Jurvetson was discovered in some brush off Mulholland Drive near Bowmont Drive with multiple stab wounds to her upper torso and neck area, police said.
She was identified in June 2015 after 46 years by a family friend who recognized her as Jane Doe No. 59, according to police. A DNA test that was compared to Jurvetson family members confirmed it was her.
Due to the location and the time period where Jurvetson was found, and the violent manner of her death, investigators wanted to rule out any possible connection to the notorious Manson murders, which occurred that same summer, but the investigation remains ongoing after an interview with Charles Manson did not “produce anything fruitful,” police said.
In August, detectives received information that Jurventson’s sister, Anne Jurvetson, discovered a postcard written by her to their parents, who are now deceased, police said.
The postcard was dated Oct. 31, 1969, about 16 days before Jurvetson’s body was found. The postcard had her return address as 5311 Melrose Ave., Apt. 306 in Hollywood, according to police. The building was once called the Paramount Hotel but was demolished in 1989 and a new building has since been built, according to police.
The postcard, which was written in Estonian, read, “Dear Mother and Father, The weather is nice and the people are kind. I have a nice little apartment. I frequently go to the beach. Please write me. Hugs, Reet.”
