Doctors unable to revive Omar Ross, a Granite Hills High graduate
VICTORVILLE — The death of a Victor Valley College wrestler came suddenly Wednesday night when he collapsed in the campus gymnasium just after returning from a jog, college officials said. The cause of his death is still under investigation.
Omar Ross was given immediate emergency assistance, the college said in an email sent to the campus community Thursday morning. VVC Athletic Trainer Amy Wilkin was joined by Sergeant Fred Gonzalez in providing emergency care.
“An ambulance responded and transported him to Desert Valley Hospital,” the email reads. “Unfortunately, doctors were unable to revive him.”
Ross was a Granite Hills High School alum, according to a statement on the Granite Hills Touchdown Club’s Facebook page, which announced the passing of their former Cougar family member.
The post said Ross graduated GHHS in 2011 and the coaching staff has “great memories of Omar.”
Granite Hills was scheduled to hold a moment of silence in honor of Ross at their game Thursday night against Littlerock and have his jersey accompany the captains to the coin toss.
At VVC, counseling and support services are offered for staff and students that were impacted by the loss, college officials said.
VVC also will hold a moment of silence in honor of Ross at its Saturday football game against Santa Ana. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
